Owner of a fuel tank ? 10 terms to remember

Many parts make up your oil tank, it is still necessary to know how they are called and what they serve. We will see together the technical terms that are good to know to better use and maintain your installation.

1) The police valve

The police valve is used to stop the fuel supply of the boiler if necessary. If your tank has a capacity greater than 1500 liters, a manual control valve must be installed on the pipe that feeds the appliances.

2) The deposit

When the oil level decreases over time, the condensation that forms on the inner walls of the tank causes oxide particles to the bottom. To prevent any burner failure or any deterioration of the tank, an annual maintenance performed by a professional is mandatory.

3) The vent

It allows the permanent maintenance of the atmospheric pressure inside the oil tank. The diameter of the vent pipe must be at least half the diameter of the fill pipe. The orifice must open to the open air above ground level, in a point visible as much as possible from the point of delivery.

4) The flexoblock

It is a flexible system of suction and return for fuel, including a check valve preventing the fuel from returning to the tank once sucked.

5) Degassing

Imperative before neutralization, the degassing step consists in eliminating the vapors of domestic oil suspended in the oil tank, by suction then by ventilation. This must first be emptied and cleared of oil residues.

6) Neutralization

It must be performed within 48 hours after degassing. This step makes the oil tank permanently unsuitable. In the case of a buried tank, filling is generally carried out using sand or concrete. For a tank above ground, the tank is usually cut out to be put out of use.

7) The manhole

Opening that allows the passage of a man in the tank for the inspection and maintenance of it.

8) The suction strainer

Appliance installed in the oil tank that allows to suck up the fuel without sucking any residues present at the bottom of the tank. The fuel oil used for combustion is thus less loaded with sediments, thus improving the efficiency of the boiler.

9) Storage

It depends on the estimated consumption for a heating season. Storage is usually renewed 2-3 times a year. The calculation formula generally used is as follows: consumption in liters of fuel per year = 120 to 180 x power of the installation (in kW).

10) The tonnage

The gauge accurately measures the amount of fuel remaining in the tank, to estimate your consumption and the date of the next filling. The quantity of fuel oil present in the tank is expressed in liters or as a percentage relative to the capacity of the tank. With the connected Fuel-it sensor, be alerted directly to your phone, computer or tablet.
